I am PhD student the Sperm Biology Group looking into the role of sperm function in ecological speciation. With colleagues from Bayreuth, Brno and Prague (joint DFG-GACR project) we are studying the role of genetics and diet on sperm metabolism in host races of the common bedbug, Cimex lectularius that either feed on bats (BL) or on humans (HL), and that are genetically diverging.
I focus on two aspects:
1) Determinants of the sperm lipidome in bedbugs
I will compare the sperm lipid profile of BL and HL males that have been fed their own diet or have been forced through the diet of the other host race.
Using FLIM I will compare the energetic status of sperm from BL and HL males that have been fed their own diet or have been forced through the diet of the other host race. We also look at the metabolism of sperm that has been exposed to other males’ seminal fluid by articifial insemination.
